A physical backrower and powerful ball carrier. Hughes is in his first year at Racing 92 and the Top 14 after his 3 year stint in Japan with the Black Rams and Urayasu.
Racing bounced back from their heart breaking loss at Castres in round 5 with a win over Montpellier 32-25.
When Captain Max Spring went down in the 8th minute, Nathan Hughes took over as Skipper for the remainder of the match. It was a solid performance without his usual highlight plays but he did make a couple of big carries and led the team well.
Had a scare early in the 2nd half when opposition Lock Florian Verhaeghe dangerously landed on Hughes knee, bending him over backwards which led to a red card. Hughes was replaced but returned for a short stint at the end of the match.
The game remained tight until Vinaya Habosi’s 76th minute try gave the home side enough of a buffer to hold out for the win.
Nathan Hughes was back in the starting 8 role this weekend in Racing’s trip to Castres.
He laid on a couple of heavy shots defensively, forced 2 turnovers and carried the ball with intent.
He left the field for a cut above his left eye but returned and continued where he left off defensively and with ball in hand.
Easily the most dominant forward on the field despite his side giving up a 10 point lead in the final 10 minutes to lose and end their 3 match win streak.
Hughes has been a revelation since his arrival at Racing and is banging on the door for Flying Fijians selection.
Nathan Hughes was used off the bench this week, a strategical move, described by his coach as “needing more impact” – (rugbyrama). He entered the game in the 50th minute and played the remainder of the game.
He made a handful of carries but Racing were forced to defend their lead in the final quarter with the home side desperately trying to get their first win of the season.
Final score 28-15 Racing
After a disappointing loss to start their season, Racing bounced back with a big win and a big scalp too, taking down defending champions Bordeaux 44-32 despite receiving 2 red cards and a yellow throughout the match.
Nathan Hughes started at Number 8 again and like his debut, was impressive and heavily involved.
He scored yet another 5 pointer off the back of a rolling maul near the Bordeaux line. While rolling mauls are usually a team effort, one must give credit to the Ba native who seems to make quite a habit of being the tryscorer in many of those situations.
He made the most carries for his side with 11 for 43 metres, 7 tackles from 9 attempts and a turnover won.
A great start to the Top 14 career of the former England representative.
