A talented ball runner, evasive with great anticipation. Maqala’s impressive debut at the 2021 Olympics saw him quickly snapped up by Bayonne where he has remained since. He was signed to a massive 5 year deal in 2025, keeping him there until 2030.

After 2 strong home wins against finalists Toulouse and Toulon, Bayonne were on the road in round 6 and found it tough against the surprise competition leaders Pau.

Centre Sireli Maqala made his return after missing their round 5 match and scored their first points in the 30th minute. After making a tackle, he forced a turnover at the ruck and without anyone in the defence noticing, he ran 60 metres untouched for his 2nd try of the season.

He cracked the 100m mark thanks largely to his runaway try and 2 turnovers along with a modest 4 tackles.

Bayonne are 2 from 2 to open the season after beating Montpellier 26-23 in a close, gripping match.

Sireli Maqala made his return after not playing in round 1, starting at Centre and partnering up with Manu Tuilagi.

They conceded the first try in the 9th minute before Maqala crossed next to the posts, ducking under a tackle to scurry over for Bayonne’s first points.

He was relatively quiet for the remainder of the match, gaining a total of 22 metres from 6 carries, made all his 6 tackles and won a turnover.

Sireli Maqala’s much awaited start at Centre ended in a solid yet unspectacular performance. He made a couple of errors but was good defensively. Was handled well by the Scottish defence and didn’t have much room to work with.

Made 13 carries for 35 metres, 1 dominant tackle and 2 turnovers won.

Moving forward he will likely hold the 13 jersey barring injury.

Maqala will start at Centre for the Flying Fijians in their test match against Scotland in Suva. Head Coach Mick Byrne named his side earlier today with a couple of forced changes but Maqala’s promotion into the starting jersey is a welcomed addition for the majority of Fiji fans.

The Ra native was one of the form players of the Top 14 this season and made an immediate impact against the Wallabies last Sunday. He replaces Iosefo Masi in the side.

It will only be his 2nd start in the 13 jersey after previously doing the job against Spain in 2024.

Bayonne lock in Maqala long term

Bayonne and Flying Fijians centre Sireli Maqala have agreed to a massive five-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2030.

Rather than settling for a typical two- or three-year deal, the Blue and Whites made a strong statement about their belief in the Ra native's value to the team.

Now 25 and coming off his fourth season with the club, Maqala delivered his best campaign yet. With Bayonne emerging as a genuine finals contender, the club is clearly locking in key pieces for a bright future.

Bayonne heading to the Semi Finals

Bayonne are one game away from the Top 14 Final after defeating and eliminating Clermont this morning. In pouring rain, points were hard to come by except by the boot. Bayonne kicking 5 penalties and a drop goal to add to their sole try giving them a 20-3 win.
