A powerful ball carrier and heavy hitter who has grown into one of Fiji’s finest exports. Mata was crowned the Pro 14’s best player in 2019 and was nominated for the European player of the year award in the same year. This only 3 years after winning Olympic Gold with Fiji.
Viliame Mata scored his first try of the Premiership season for Bristol in their win over Exeter 18-14.
The Flying Fijians veteran turned back the clock on a sideline dash beating 2 players in a 50 metre run to score the Bear’s first try of the afternoon.
It wasn’t your typical flashy Bristol performance rather a gritty and defence-led match. At one point the Bears defended their line for nearly 10 minutes at the end of the match.
Mata played the full 80, making 13 carries for 54 metres, 1 linebreak, 1 offload and 6 tackles defensively.
They’re on the road again next week against Gloucester.
Viliame Mata started at his usual Number 8 position for Fiji in their win over Scotland. Strong carried into the defence, bending the line and as always punishing in defence.
2 strong showings in Fiji’s July test matches proves he still by far and away their best Number 8.
Viliame Mata led the way for the Flying Fijians in their test match against the Wallabies in Newcastle. The veteran Number 8 got over the gainline on nearly every carry and dominated the middle of the field.
Dropped a pass which looked certain for a try but was forgiven for the sheer amount of work he had put in up to that point (64th minute). Was replaced straight after by Albert Tuisue.
8 carries for 13 metres and 10 tackles in defence.

Bristol won their 3rd from 4 matches to start the Premiership season, this time beating Gloucester 49-34.
Winger Kalaveti Ravouvou scored 2 tries and Number 8 Viliame Mata also got across the line for the Bears.
Mata set up Ravouvou's first try in the 71st minute, a Sevens style offload for his winger who beat a couple of defenders to finish off a superb try.
Ravouou would score again minutes later after chasing through a kick in the 76th minute.
The Bears move into the top 4 following the win.
Bristol shocked the competition with a gutsy and gritty win over the much fancied Exeter.
Better known for their flair and attacking brilliance, the Bears showed a side to them that was not believed to be in their DNA - pure defensive resilience.
Viliame Mata scored their opening try in the 25th minute. He beat the initial 2 defenders before running the best part of 50 metres untouched.
In the closing 15 minutes, the home side defended their line as the Chiefs tried desperately to score what would have been a go-ahead score, instead denied time and time again by a resolute Bristol defence.
Head Coach Pat Lam called it "the proudest I have ever been" post game.
