Viliame Mata started at his usual Number 8 position for Fiji in their win over Scotland. Strong carried into the defence, bending the line and as always punishing in defence.

2 strong showings in Fiji’s July test matches proves he still by far and away their best Number 8.

July 9, 2025

Viliame Mata led the way for the Flying Fijians in their test match against the Wallabies in Newcastle. The veteran Number 8 got over the gainline on nearly every carry and dominated the middle of the field.

Dropped a pass which looked certain for a try but was forgiven for the sheer amount of work he had put in up to that point (64th minute). Was replaced straight after by Albert Tuisue.

8 carries for 13 metres and 10 tackles in defence.
