Pro D2 Day 6 Review

Day 6 of the Pro D2 done and dusted. All games were played on Friday night (France) with the lone game on Thursday.

Benito Masilevu started on the wing for Grenoble in their 21-16 win over Rouen. Pio Muarua started at number 8 and was yellow carded in the 54th minute for a high tackle. They have both played 3 games this year, coincidentally the same matches.

Luke Tagi and Eroni Sau both started for Provence in a high scoring affair which they won 30-28 over Carcassone. Sau was making his comeback after missing their last game. The Sledgehammer was at his devastating best on the night. Several bone crunching tackles and was threatening with every touch not the least his line breaks returning the ball from his own half. It’s a shame there’s not recorded stats for the Pro D2.

Peni Rokoduguni played his third match of the season after returning on the bench for Colomiers in their 17-19 loss to USON Nevers. Colomiers was undefeated up until this game.

The match of the round was Oyonnax hosting league leaders Mont de Marsan. Adrian Sanday scored in the 69th minute to push his side to a 36-12 lead. An impressive performance from the home side to hand the visitors their first loss of the season. Gabiriele Lovobalavu came on in the 57th minute. while Wame Naituvi scored Montois’ only try in the 78th minute. The try makes him the top tryscorer for all Fijians in the Pro D2 and Top-14. (3 tries) Nacani Wakaya was also at centre for Montois.

Niko Matawalu came off the bench in the 57th minute for Montauban in their 25-19 win over RC Vannes. He replaced the winger. The veteran could earn a recall into the Flying Fijians for the Autumn tests.

Timilai Rokoduru started on the wing for Agen in his first match of the season. Agen lost the match 15-17 to Narbonne. Kalionio Ramoka came off the bench in the 64th minute. On the winning side Apimeleki Nawaqatabu played the entire match at inside centre.

Moving forward I think some of the players in this competition are contenders for the Flying Fijians. Eroni Sau obviously is the incumbent winger and hasn’t done anything to harm his chances. Luke Tagi has been in good form, playing every match this season. Expect to see him in the match day rotation probably off the bench with Eroni Mawi.

I do think that the fullback position is wide open. Setariki Tuicuvu has only played two matches this season for Brive while Kini Murimurivale hasn’t played at all. His last match was against the All-Blacks in July. This opens the door for who I believe are two players who wouldn’t go wrong in a white jersey, and that’s Adrian Sanday and Nadroga flyer Wame Natuvi. Both have been in good form for the past couple years and deserve to be considered.

That wraps up the 6th round of the Pro D2. Leave your comments below.Happy Fiji Day!!
