Superstar winger Joeli Vidiri played out an illustrious career which included tests for both his home and adopted nation of Fiji and New Zealand.
He played 61 games for the Auckland Blues and has the equal highest tries in a single match with 4.
A cult hero in Auckland, so popular he had a song written about him called “Give me hope Joeli”
Embed from Getty ImagesHe is known for his tackle breaking and tryscoring ability thanks to his big frame and powerful running. Joeli was part of a double dose of dynamite with fellow winger Jonah Lomu. They both terrorised opposition defenders in the late 90’s for Auckland.
Vidiri first appeared for Fiji as a Sevens player before his National 15’s debut against Japan in 1994. In total he has 11 appearances for Fiji, 7 of which are test caps.
He switched allegiances to New Zealand after joining Auckland and would later play two tests for the All-Blacks and also for their Sevens side where he helped New Zealand to the Gold Medal in 1998, against Fiji.
Sadly in February of 2022 Joeli Passed away from an illness at only 48. Our prayers and condolences go out to the Vidiri family. He was a much loved man around the world and his legacy lives on in all Rugby fans and Fijians alike.
