Bayonne lock in Maqala long term

Bayonne and Flying Fijians centre Sireli Maqala have agreed to a massive five-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2030.

Rather than settling for a typical two- or three-year deal, the Blue and Whites made a strong statement about their belief in the Ra native's value to the team.

Now 25 and coming off his fourth season with the club, Maqala delivered his best campaign yet. With Bayonne emerging as a genuine finals contender, the club is clearly locking in key pieces for a bright future.

Player Updates

Centrepiece of Fijian attack

Josua Tuisova proved again to be the centrepiece of the Flying Fijians attacking game. Constantly hitting the ball up into a brick wall and tacking several defenders to bring him down.

At times he looked a little overworked, leaving little in the tank for later in the game. He was replaced by Vilimoni Botitu in the 65th minute.

A mammoth 19 carries for 118 metres, 2 offloads and 7 defenders beaten. Defensively he was also a brick wall, causing a maul turnovers and 2 ruck turnovers.

Broke the 150 metre barrier from 10 carries, made 4 linebreaks and beat 8 defenders – all game highs.

His popularity would have also taken a huge boost with his highlights over the last 2 weeks in particular going viral.

Sireli
Maqala
Fiji 29-14 Scotland

Sireli Maqala’s much awaited start at Centre ended in a solid yet unspectacular performance. He made a couple of errors but was good defensively. Was handled well by the Scottish defence and didn’t have much room to work with.

Made 13 carries for 35 metres, 1 dominant tackle and 2 turnovers won.

Moving forward he will likely hold the 13 jersey barring injury.

Salesi Rayasi put in another strong showing for the Flying Fijians, this time against Scotland in Suva.

He made 52 metres from 9 carries and a clean linebreak where he nearly set up a try. He threw the final pass for Kalaveti Ravouvou who scored Fiji’s 2nd try.

Moving forward Rayasi looks to be Fiji’s best option in the 15 jersey and barring injury will likely hold that position going into the Autumn Nations Series.

Sam
Matavesi
Decent minutes in Scotland test

Sam Matavesi played the final 26 minutes of the Flying Fijians win over Scotland. He came on after a couple of lost lineouts by the home side who up until that point were doing quite well.

With Matavesi dropping out of professional rugby and returning to Camborne RFC to join his brother Josh, this leaves a fair sized hole to fill given that Tevita Ikanivere is headed to Japan. Come the November window, we could see our top 2 Hookers missing from the squad.
